Roughing It by Mark Twain describes the Hawaiian funeral as an orgy. Bringing life to a funeral makes some sense. What better way to commemorate the dead than to bring forth a new child. Many prefer separating sex for fun from procreation, but they do cross. Life and death also cross. I guess it is all about the cross. Psychopomps and boundary deities deal with the cross; they are the angels and archangels of pagan religion; they deliver to and guard the heavenly gates. Human superficiality changes, but the deeper philosophy stays the same – the circle of life.
